Achalasia (Cardiospasm)
SYMPTOMS. Signs may include difficulty in swallowing that gets progressivly
more difficult, possible chest pain and nightly regurgitation of undigested
food that, if inhaled into the lungs, may cause lung abscess or pneumonia.
CAUSES are unknown at this time. Food and drink fail to pass freely into the
stomach because the lower end of the esophagus does not relax normally.
TREATMENT. Surgery may be required.
.An instrument may be required to dialate the lower end of the esophagus.
